Summary
Kayak on a journey of discovery though the African countryside. Travel peacefully along the spectacular coast of one of Africa’s Great Lakes and witness the verdant landscape, vibrant local communities, birds and wildlife that thrive in the water, on the shores and islands of Lake Kivu.

You’ll paddle around protected rainforest islands and get up close to the wildlife including monkeys that often jump from tree to tree above the water and will probably see otters swimming in the water. Being silent on the water means you’ll also get close to dozens of species of African birds that dart in and out of the bushes and trees that line the water!

On this special, one-off trip, we'll depart from Bethany hotel in Kibuye, stay in Ishara guesthouse for one night and camp on the three other nights of our journey. Our campsites are the highlight - usually uninhabited islands, where we enjoy a delicious meal prepared on our campfire (and stoves), using fresh ingredients sourced from nearby villages when possible. We end the trip at Emeraude Kivu Lodge.

Notes
This is a superb adventure in Rwanda. It's the most exciting and rewarding way to travel, but you'll need to be prepared to rough it - just a little. With no facilities at all on the islands where we camp, the experience is as rewarding as it gets. The first four days we kayak for about 12 - 16 km, but you'll need to save some energy for the final day that is about 21km. It's essential that you stay in Kibuye on the first day as we will meet at 7:30am, and we may not arrive into Cyangugu on the last day until 4 or 5pm, so onward travel on the same day is not recommended. We will provide free transport back to Kibuye on Wednesday 5th July.

Food whilst camping is included, but you'll need to pay for your own accommodation and meals at the Ishara and also at your choice of hotel in Kibuye before departure and Cyangugu at the end.

Whilst this is a bespoke trip, please see the generic details about kayaking on Lake Kivu for details about what to bring.
